' Prophet: Giants' outfielder Hunter Pence is right. The Nationals are good at "Pitching and hitting." Gio Gonzalez has been exactly what D.C. GM Mike Rizzo promised he would be when the general manager acquired the 26-year-old left-hander from the Oakland A's this past December and said Gonzalez would slot in nicely between power right-handers Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann. He has... slotted in, uh, nicely. Minus Jayson Werth you might have thought the Nats' "hitting" probably wasn't going to be as strong as it could be tonight, but Roger Bernadina, who replaced Werth in the lineup when the 32-year-old Nats' outfielder was a late scratch with a sore right ankle, had a .333/.418/.377 line over the last 29 games and 80 PA's leading up to the first of three for the Nats in AT&T and he kept hitting. Werth was scratched, and the Shark was inserted in left with Bryce Harper in center and Michael Morse in right around the Nats' outfield. There were no details on Werth's injury before the game. His absence didn't seem to hurt the Nationals' offense. The Nationals scored 14 runs on 21 hits when it was all over, knocking Ryan Vogelsong out of the game early, and Gio Gonzalez was pretty sharp in San Francisco, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings before he gave up a two-run home run and left the game in the seventh... with a 12-run lead...

Star-divide

' Gio pwns The Bay Area: Ryan Zimmerman worked the count full, battling Giants' right-hander Ryan Vogelsong for eight pitches before lining to right and over Hunter Pence's head for one-out RBI double and a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zimmerman's 27th double brought Steve Lombardozzi around after the Nats' leadoff man singled to start the opening frame. 21 pitches in the inning for San Francisco's starter. Nats' lefty Gio Gonzalez threw an 11-pitch, 1-2-3 first, striking Melky Cabrera out with a 93 mph 1-2 fastball upstairs on the eleventh pitch of the home-half of the inning. The Nationals went down in order in the top of the second. Gio Gonzalez walked Hunter Pence with one down in the bottom of the inning. The Nats' left-handed starter got a glove on a headhunting two-out line drive back up the middle off Brandon Belt's bat, but the ball bent the webbing of Gio's glove back and continued through the infield grass behind the mound and past second, allowing Pence to move into scoring position with two down. The two Giants runners were stranded, however, when shortstop Joaquin Arias grounded out to end a 19-pitch inning by the Nationals' starter. 1-0 Nats after two in AT&T.

' Flood. Gates.: Steve Lombardozzi walked with one down in the third, taking a low 3-1 pitch from Vogelsong after singling to center off the Giants' starter in his first at bat of the night. Bryce Harper K'd on an 0-2 fastball the first time up, but lined the first pitch he saw the other way for an opposite field single in his second AB. Ryan Zimmerman singled to center to load the bases for Adam LaRoche with one down, and the Nats' first baseman walked on a full-count fastball up high from the Giants' starter, who walked a run in that made it 2-0 Nationals. Michael Morse sent a scorcher of a grounder toward third that ate up Giants' third baseman Marco Scutaro and brought Harper in, 3-0. Giants' second baseman Ryan Theriot kicked a dribbler from Danny Espinosa into right as he slid trying to field it and it was 4-0 Nationals with one out in the third. San Francisco's skipper Bruce Bochy got tossed for arguing with first base ump Jerry Lane when the ump called Roger Bernadina safe on a grounder to the mound that went off Vogelsong to Theriot, whose throw appeared to beat the Shark to first. Another run scored though, 5-0 and three more came in when Kurt Suzuki cleared the bases with a three-run double by third into left. 8-0 Nationals. A two-out single by Steve Lombardozzi ended Vogelsong's night and Brad Penny came on to get the third out.

' 3.0 Scoreless: Angel Pagan hit a one-out, ground-rule double over Bryce Harper's head for the Giants' second hit off the Nats' left-hander, Gio Gonzalez, but two outs later Pagan was stranded at second after a Marco Scutaro groundout and a Melky Cabrera pop to Adam LaRoche in foul territory off first. 10-pitch 3rd by Gio Gonzalez. 40 pitches in 3.0 scoreless. 8-0 Nationals.

' 3 for 3: Ryan Zimmerman was 3 for 3 after he singled to center off Giants' reliever Brad Penny in the top of the fourth. The Nats' third baseman tagged and took second on a LaRoche fly to center, advancing himself in an 8-0 game. Michael Morse walked in the next at bat and Danny Espinosa reached safely on yet another infield single. Roger Bernadina earned his hit, however, doubling off the brick wall in right field to drive two more runs in and make it 10-0 Nationals. A Kurt Suzuki line drive to center made it 11-0 Nationals after 3 and a 1/2. Giants' C Buster Posey lined to center on a 94 mph 2-2 two-seamer from Gio Gonzalez for San Francisco's third hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Gonzalez dropped a 1-2 curve on Hunter Pence to get a swinging K for out no.1, Ryan Theriot flew to center for out no.2 and Ryan Theriot's groundout to second ended the inning after 17 pitches by the Nationals' starter. 4.0 scoreless.

' Charlie Bryce Hustle: Bryce Harper singled off the Brad Penny to start the fifth, then went first-to-third' on a one-out groundout to second by Adam LaRoche when nobody bothered to cover the third base bag. A wild pitch in the next at bat allowed the Nats' 19-year-old outfielder to score the Nats' 12th run of the game, 12-0, and a walk to Tyler Moore followed, as did a two-run HR by Danny Espinosa as the Nationals stormed out to a 14-0 lead over the Giants. Espinosa's 12th. Roger Bernadina's two-out single ended Penny's night. Left-hander Jose Mijares gave up Kurt Suzuki's second double of the night but struck Gio Gonzalez out to end the top of the inning. A 19-pitch frame by Gio Gonzalez in which he gave up a two-out walk after recording two backwards Ks, ended when Marco Scutaro grounded out to end Gio's 5th scoreless frame. 76 pitches overall, 14-0 Nats.

' 14? 14?: Giants lefty Jose Mijares retired the Nationals in order in the sixth. Gio Gonzalez needed just ten pitches in a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning after which he was up to 86 pitches in 6.0 scoreless frames. Giants' lefty Jeremy Affeldt gave up Danny Espinosa's fourth hit of the night in the top of the seventh, but completed a scoreless inning in relief. Gio Gonzalez gave up a leadoff single by Ryan Theriot in the top of the seventh. A diving [CHOMP!] catch by Roger Bernadina on a line drive to short left by Brandon Belt and a strong throw in from center by Bryce Harper to catch Joaquin Arias trying to strech a single helped Gio Gonzalez get the first two outs of the seventh, but Giants' infielder Brandon Crawford's two-out, two-run blast to right finally ended the Nats' starter's night. 14-2 Nationals after six.

' Gio's Line: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 Ks, 1 HR, 99 P, 64 S, 10/3 GO/FO.

' Approaching 1:00 AM EDT: Tom Gorzelanny recorded the final out of the seventh, then retook the mound in the bottom of eighth after Giants' right-hander Santiago Casilla gave up the 19th (Chad Tracy double) and 20th (Lombardozzi single) hits of the night by the Nationals. Gorzelanny put the first two runners on when both Marco Scutaro and Melky Cabrera singled, but the Nats' left-hander retired the next three batters without letting a run in. Still 14-2 after eight in AT&T. RHP George Kontos held the Nationals to a walk and a hit (no.21) by Roger Bernadina (who was 4 for 6 after the single) in a scoreless top of the ninth.

' (Nats +25 pts for breaking an AT&T Park Record):

' FINISH THEM!!: Tom Gorzelanny came back out for one more in the ninth, issuing a one-out walk to Joaquin Arias before retiring Pablo Sandoval and Gregor Blanco to end it. 14-2 Nationals final.
