' Cahill vs Strasburg: 24-year-old D-Backs' right-hander Trevor Cahill retired the Nationals' in order in the top of the first. The '06 2nd Round pick by the A's acquired as part of the deal that sent Ryan Cook, Collin Cowgill and Jarrod Parker to Oakland, needed just one pitch to retire Washington's leadoff man Steve Lombardozzi on a line drive to first and 14 more to get Bryce Harper looking and Ryan Zimmerman swinging to end the opening inning with back-to-back Ks. Stephen Strasburg needed 15 pitches to get through the home half of the frame, striking Arizona outfielder Jason Kubel out for out no.3 and K no. 1 with a diving 96 mph full-count fastball that was in the dirt and Kurt Suzuki's mitt before the D-Backs' three-hole hitter had stopped swinging. 0-0 after one in Chase Field.
' WereWerth: Jayson Werth doubled off the GEICO sign in center field for his 7th double of 2012 with two down in the top of the first and Danny Espinosa walked, but Nats' backstop Kurt Suzuki was thrown out by Stephen Drew on a relatively sharp groundout to short that ended a 24-pitch inning by Trevor Cahill. D-Backs' first baseman Paul Goldschmidt battled Strasburg for nine pitches before grounding out to third to start the Diamondbacks' second. Justin Upton worked the count full but K'd. A two-out walk to Miguel Montero put Arizona's first runner on, but Strasburg got over to cover first on a Chris Johnson groundout to LaRoche, and had to catch a thrown when Adam LaRoche found no one home at second base. A 23-pitch inning ended when the Nats' 24-year-old right-hander stepped on first. 0-0 after two.
' #LOMBOLOBBY!: Steve Lombardozzi lined to right-center for a one-out triple, his third of the year, with one down in the Nationals' third, and the second baseman scored when Bryce Harper lined a 1-2 change to Justin Upton in right for a sac fly RBI. 1-0 Nationals over the D-Backs after three. Stephen Strasburg retired the first two D-Backs he saw on five pitches in the bottom of the third, then issued a four-pitch walk to Stephen Drew before striking Aaron Hill out to end a 13-pitch inning and 3.0 scoreless overall with 3 Ks and 51 pitches. 1-0 Nats.
' 9 Minutes: Trevor Cahill threw a 14-pitch 4th, retiring Jayson Werth, Danny Espinosa (in an 8-pitch AB) and Kurt Suzuki in order. 74 pitches overall in 4.0 IP for the D-Backs' hurler. A 97-mph 2-2 fastball to Jason Kubel got Stephen Strasburg a groundout to short. A 95 mph four-seamer to Paul Goldschmidt got the Nats' starter a fly to right and two outs on six pitches, but a six-pitch walk to Justin Upton put the second Arizona runner on in front of Miguel Montero, who had walked in the second for the D-Backs' only other baserunner through 3.2 IP. A foul ball by Montero hit home plate ump Dale Scott square on the chin and put the big man down. Scott had to leave the game. After a slight delay, CB Bucknor replaced Scott behind the dish and Strasburg and Montero picked it up in a 1-2 count which went full before Strasburg issued the second two-out walk in a nine-pitch at bat in front of Chris Johnson, whose RBI single to left was the D-Backs' first hit. 1-1 game when Upton scored. All with two outs. A 27-pitch inning has Strasburg at 78 pitches overall.
' TKCHZ!!: Steve Lombardozzi was 2 for 3 tonight and a double and HR away from the cycle after he singled with one out in the Nationals' fifth. A Bryce Harper groundout moved the Nats' second baseman up to second but Ryan Zimmerman was down to the last strike of the inning when he connected with a 2-2 change from Cahill and sent a line drive HR out to left for a two-out, two-run HR. No. 16 on the year for the Nats' 3B. THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!! 3-1 Nationals. Stephen Strasburg missed with a first-pitch fastball to Trevor Cahill, then threw three-straight strikes, the last a 94 mph four-seamer that was called strike three for the Nats' right-hander's fourth K. A 2-2 curve froze Stephen Drew for out no.2 on another called strike three. More of the same for Aaron Hill, though it was a full-count curve as Strasburg struck out the side, all of them looking in a 15-pitch frame.
' MORSE CRUSH!!: Michael Morse hit a 1-0 sinker from Cahill to straight-center in Chase Field and out over the center field wall 446 ft from home. Morse's 11th gave the Nats a 4-1 lead over the D-Backs. Jayson Werth singled on the next pitch from Cahill, but two outs later he was standing at second after an Espinosa K and a bunt by Kurt Suzuki when Stephen Strasburg grounded back to the mound. 3 outs. 13 pitches overall. 105 pitches for Cahill after 6.0 IP. 4-1 Nationals. Bryce Harper walked in the next at bat to put two on in front of Ryan Zimmerman. Albers got a fly to right from the Nats' 3B, but a DP opportunity on an Adam LaRoche grounder to first went wrong for Arizona when the covering pitcher missed the throw back to first. Should have been a 3-6-1 but it's an E:6 instead and it's 5-1 Nats after six and a half. Sean Burnett retired the D-Backs in order in the bottom of the inning, throwing just nine pitches in the quick 1-2-3. Still 5-1 D.C.

Ryan Mattheus came on to pitch the bottom of the inning and retired the side in order on 13 pitches, setting the 11th, 12th and 13th D-Backs down in order. A throw from short by Stephen Drew pulled Paul Goldschmidt off the bag and allowed Steve Lombardozzi to reach safely with his fourth hit of the game. Moore took third on the play and scored on another Bryce Harper sac fly. 6-1 Nats, Lombardozzi took second aggressively on the play and scored the seventh run of the game on an Adam LaRoche double to right after a Zimmerman walk. 7-1 Nationals. LaRoche's 24th is a line drive off the right field wall on a 3-2 fastball from Mike Zagurski. Make that 9-1 as the Nats pour it on with Jayson Werth lining by third into left for his second double of the game and his 8th two-bagger of 2012. 9-1 after eight and a half.
' Rally? No: Craig Stammen got a fly ball to center from Jason Kubel in the first at bat of the D-Backs' 9th, but Roger Bernadina misjudged it and missed an attempted sliding catch. Leadoff double. One out later, pinch hitter John McDonald reached on a grounder to short, arriving at first ahead a of throw from Ryan Zimmerman. Two on with one out. Wil Nieves grounded out to second for out no. and Chris Johnson grounded to short to end a long series opener. 9-1 final. The Nats win their seventh-straight.
