Wire Taps: Washington Nationals Beat Poor Injured Phillies; Teddy Wins; Davey Johnson On Bryce Harper As ROY

The Washington Nationals will have to wait until Friday night to find out who they're going to be playing on Sunday in the first game of the NLDS. Until then there's lots of links for you to read...

Bryce Harper's rookie campaign started on April 28th in Los Angeles and ended in the nation's capital with a pinch running appearance late in yesterday's win over the Philadelphia Phillies. In 139 games in his first season in the majors, the 2010 no.1 overall pick posted a .270/.340/.477 line with 26 doubles, nine triples, 22 HRs, 98 runs scored, 56 walks and 120 Ks in 597 PAs over which he was worth +4.8 fWAR. Harper's 22 HRs were the second most among rookies behind only the Rockies' Wilin Rosario (28 HRs). His 98 runs scored were the NL's best, his 18 SBs were second only to the Brewers' Norichika Aoki. The +4.8 fWAR lead all NL Rookies with Aoki (+3.1) and the Cincinnati Reds' Todd Frazier (+2.9) and teammate Zack Cozart (+2.9) tied for third. More Bryce Hype?

During his weekly appearance on 106.7 the FAN In D.C.'s The Sports Junkies on Wednesday morning, Davey Johnson was asked where 19-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper ranked amongst the talented young players he's encountered during his second career as a manager. "I tell you," Johnson said, "He's been the most fun to coach and watch play. Makeup off the chart. Effort off the chart. Skill off the chart. So, [it] would be hard for me to say anybody could beat him out for the best rookie I've ever managed."

Later Wednesday morning in his pregame meeting with reporters, the 69-year-old Nats' manager was asked how Harper stacked up against players like the Reds' Frazier, the D-Backs' Wade Miley (16-11; 3.33 ERA, 3.15 FIP, 1.71 BB/9, 6.66 K/9, +4.8 fWAR) and the rest of his competition for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. "He'd get my vote," Johnson responded, "I wouldn't trade him for any of the other two. The year he's had? Same thing. I think he's been energy, scored a lot of runs for us, got on base a lot, played great defense. He's been great. I guess the guy in Cincy [Frazier], because we have similar records... but different opponents, so... [Harper] gets my vote."

Does Harper get your vote? He'll get to play his first postseason game on Sunday. The Nationals won't know where they'll be going to start the NLDS until Friday night. It's going to be a long wait... Until then there are links and lots of them for you to read. Starting... RIGHT NOW!!:
