Towering 6'9'' right-hander Alex Meyer was (13-12) overall in three seasons pitching for the University of Kentucky Wildcats after he decided against signing with the Boston Red Sox who drafted him out of high school in the 20th Round of the '08 Draft. Meyer struck out 253 batters (10.77 K/9) in 211.1 innings on the mound for the WIldcats. In his junior year, in 2011, he was (7-5) in 14 starts with 46 walks (4.09 BB/9) and 110 K's (9.77 K/9) in 101.1 IP. Meyer was drafted in the 1st Round by the Washington Nationals the second-time around, with the Nats making him their second 1st Round pick, 23rd overall, after they selected Rice 3B Anthony Rendon with the first of three 1st Round picks they had in 2011. "He's a big power right-handed pitcher," D.C. GM Mike Rizzo told reporters after the selection, "He's got three plus pitches in the future. He's got two present plus pitches." Nats' scouting director, Kris Kline, told reporters that Meyer had a chance of becoming a "top-of-the-rotation starter," and compared him to a Boston Red Sox' arm. "Worst-case scenario," Mr. Kline said, "You've got a [Daniel] Bard-type reliever with a better slider and somebody that you bring in at the back of your bullpen that can dominate."
Meyer has started thus far, going (6-4) in his first 17 pro outings with the Nats' Low-A affiliate, the Hagerstown Suns. The right-hander has given up 64 hits and 33 runs, 31 earned while walking 34 (3.64 BB/9) and striking out 98 (10.50 K/9) in 84.0 IP, over which he's posted a 3.32 ERA.
The right-hander will be in Kansas City, Missouri's Kauffman Stadium this afternoon, as the lone representative of the Nationals' organization in this year's All-Star Futures Game which airs on ESPN2 and MLB.com and can be heard on Sirius/XM channel 89 at 5:00 pm EDT. Meyer tweeted earlier this week that he was headed to KC and excited about the opportunity:
