Washington Nationals' skipper Davey Johnson was cautious about offering a timetable for right fielder Jayson Werth's return from the broken left wrist he suffered in last night's game with the Philadelphia Phillies, telling reporters, "I've had broken bones, I know it's six weeks, but I'm not a doctor, we're going to get experts on it." According to a report this afternoon by MLB.com's Bill Ladson, Werth is likely to miss more than the early estimate his manager offered (with qualification of course):
#Nats RF Jayson Werth had left wrist surgery today. He will be out for more than six weeks. I was told at least 12 weeks. #Nats #MLB

Werth injured the wrist attempting to make a sliding catch on a low liner to right by Phillies' third baseman Placido Polanco in the sixth innings of last night's series finale with Philadelphia. The Nats' outfielder appeared to have the play lined up but as he caught the ball he came down hard on his wrist, bending it back in a way that immediately had anyone who saw it fearing the worst. Davey Johnson solemnly told reporters after the game what was obvious upon viewing replays of the outfielder suffering the injury. "He has a broken wrist," Johnson said, "And he's going to be down for a while. He's going to go see a specialist, but it's broken in the opposite side of where he had the other problem. It was a clean break, and he'll be out for a while."
After struggling in 2011 in the first season of the 7-year/$126M dollar deal he signed with Washington in the winter of 2010, Werth was off to a strong start this season, posting a .276/.372/.439 line with five doubles and three home runs in 27 games and 113 at bats. Davey Johnson said last night that 19-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper would take over for Werth in right while the 32-year-old, 10-year veteran is on the shelf.
