An ankle injury (partial fracture of the left ankle) limited Washington Nationals' 2011 1st Round pick Anthony Rendon to just 43 games and 160 plate appearances in his first year in the Nats' organization after Washington selected him 6th overall out of Rice University. Separate ankle injuries in 2009 and 2010 and a shoulder issue during his final college campaign in 2011 caused the infielder's stock to drop and resulted in Rendon being available when the Nationals' spot came around, when he was once considered a potential no.1 overall pick.
After posting a .233/.363/.489 line with eight doubles, four triples and six home runs at four stops in the Nats' system in 2012, Rendon went to the Arizona Fall League where the 22-year-old third baseman hit 10 doubles, one triple, stole six bases and put up a .338/.436/.494 line over 22 games, walking 15 times and striking out 14 times in 94 plate appearances. The major concern for Rendon is just staying healthy and remaining on the field in 2013.
"For him it's just keeping him on the field and getting him repetitions to put him in a position to help our big league club," Nationals' Director of Player Development Doug Harris told the MLB Network's Jim Duquette and Mike Ferrin in an interview earlier this month. "I think early on we challenged him with some steps that were aggressive but gave him a taste of what he was going to be seeing in the Fall League, but once he piled on some at bats in the Fall League he really settled in and we began to see the type of player he has a chance to be." Rendon's likely to start the season at Double-A in the Nationals' system this year.
Baseball America ranked him as the 30th overall prospect in baseball this afternoon when they released their list of the Top 100 Prospects for 2013. Rendon was not alone on the list, joining him in the Top 100 were 18-year-old Nats' 2012 1st Round pick Lucas Giolito (no.67), who's currently rehabbing from Tommy John and Rendon's fellow 2011 1st Round pick Brian Goodwin, (no.70), the outfielder out of Miami Dade college who had a combined .280/.384/.469 line with 26 doubles and 14 HRs in 100 games and 452 PAs split between Class-A Hagerstown and Double-A Harrisburg in 2012. Goodwin went to the AFL too, where the 22-year-old outfielder had a .225/.330/.463 line with six doubles, two triples and three home runs in 20 games and 94 PAs.
The Nationals landed five prospects on ESPN.com's Keith Law's Top 100 this winter, with A.J. Cole and Nathan Karns joining Rendon, Giolito and Goodwin on the ESPN analyst's list. MLB.com's scouts had Rendon, Goodwin, Giolito and Cole in their Top 100 when it was released earlier this year. Check out the rest of Baseball America's Top 100 Prospect List below:
