120415_medium

  • Tested: Ross Detwiler (-29.5%) gives up 5 R, 1 ER on 2 Ks, 2 BBs, and a first-inning granny (-31.0%). He had to get 6 outs in the first thanks to some terrible calls (umps: -36.6%), but soldiered on through 5 IP.
  • Chipping away: Adam LaRoche (+10.6%) hits a two-run single to get the Nats on the board in the 4th (+15.1%),
  • Shutdowns: Craig Stammen (+9.3%) only strikes out 3 over a scoreless 6th and 7th, while Ryan Mattheus (+9.8%), Brad Lidge (+12.3%) and Henry Rodriguez (+12.3%) put up zeros in the next 3 innings.
  • Pulling even: Ian Desmond (+41.9%) hits an RBI double to get within a run in the 5th (+20.9%), then ties it in the 7th with a two-out, RBI single (+23.3%).
  • Blowing it: Tyler Clippard (-46.7%) gives up 3 ER in the 10th on broken-bat bloops and the go-behind RBI double (-36.1%).

Bonus graph (after the jump): Laz Diaz is terrible at umpiring.

Look at all the random green inside the box and red outside! Pick a strike zone and stay with it, Laz. The 4-run first never should have happened, given there were three missed 3rd outs before the big hit (including the horrendous call at first), and the Reds ended up winning by... 3. (Yes, I know it never would have gone to extras, and it's a fallacy to assume the same game without the HR, blah, blah. I don't care--Blue stank today.)
